The Lucky Bug Bed and Breakfast Location and Property
Introduction to Lucky Bug Bed and Breakfast
The Lucky Bug Bed and Breakfast began with the Krauskopf family’s move from Mt. Shasta, California, to Lake Arenal in the mid‑90s. Their adventure started simply, as they made sausages and sold them from the back of a truck. Soon, long lines of customers formed, and the demand grew quickly. As a result, this early success inspired what later became the well‑known Caballo Negro restaurant. It also set the stage for the creation of the Lucky Bug Bed and Breakfast and the Lucky Bug Gallery.

The Origins of the Lucky Bug Name
Monika and Wille, parents of triplet daughters, arrived in Costa Rica with a vision to create something meaningful. The name “Lucky Bug” came from their daughters’ attempts to say “ladybug,” which always came out as “lucky bug.” Because the family cared deeply about rescuing and supporting animals, they began selling art to help fund their efforts. In addition, this idea eventually grew into the Lucky Bug Gallery. Today, the gallery is known throughout Costa Rica for its vibrant collection of local art, ceramics, sculptures, and one‑of‑a‑kind treasures.
A Family Legacy at Lake Arenal
After Wille’s passing and as the triplets moved into their own lives, Monika became the driving force behind the gallery, restaurant, and bed and breakfast. Over time, Lucky Bug Bed and Breakfast became more than a place to stay. Instead, it grew into a well‑known landmark along the main route around Lake Arenal. Travelers crossing between the Atlantic and Pacific sides of the Northern Zone often stop here to rest. Because of this, many guests return again and again to enjoy the warm welcome and the unique atmosphere Monika has created.
Carrying the Vision Forward
Today, Lucky Bug Gallery, Caballo Negro, and the Lucky Bug Bed and Breakfast continue to thrive. They enchant visitors with creativity, hospitality, and a strong sense of place. As a result, the entire property stands as a testament to the family’s spirit, their dedication to animal welfare, and their passion for art and community.
